Jay Roth’s service to public education began in the secondary classroom as a high school mathematics teacher, department head, and teacher leader at southwest Missouri’s first recognized Professional Learning Community high school. During that time he also became a teacher trainer of cooperative learning and multiple intelligences strategies. After completing a Master’s Degree in Mathematics Education thesis in 2007 on the impact that learning communities have on the Missouri mathematics state assessment, Jay was recruited from the classroom by the Missouri Professional Learning Communities Project (MO PLC) at Missouri’s State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and the Southwest Regional Professional Development Center (SWRPDC) to train school administrators, leadership teams, and teachers in creating a collaborative culture dedicated to high levels of learning in their school. As an accomplished professional developer, Jay develops his expertise in Assessment for Learning, in Mathematics Common Core State Standards, and as a Cognitive CoachingSM Agency Trainer.
Motivated by an Adaptive Schools Foundation Seminar participant who offered an Einstein quotation—””The significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them””—Jay founded Pathways to Insight, LLC, an agency devoted to developing individuals and groups in organizations to expand conversations, capabilities, and capacities for both self-directed and collaborative approaches to innovative thought and inquiry.
Jay has professional memberships in Learning Forward (formerly NSDC), Missouri Learning Forward, ASCD, and has presented multiple sessions at the national Learning Forward/NSDC annual conference and at regional Missouri conferences.
