We continue this week in our exploration of the Problem-Resolving Map and invite you to take a moment to focus on the Pace. Pacing is the tool cluster we use in coaching a person when they are emotionally distraught. It acknowledges the person’s emotions, summarizes the cognitive content, and shifts thinking to envision a desired state. It is the power of paraphrasing that supports a person in releasing the neurotransmitters in the brain required to do complex thinking in the neocortex. This simple map, using paraphrasing language, assists a person in making both physical and mental changes. Reacquaint yourself with the pace this week in the Learning Guide and look for opportunities to support others with this tool. As you practice, remember the importance of a broad goal with a first party focus. Use the verbs be, have, or feel to be certain your paraphrase is a destination goal, not a journey goal.
